Black Flash and Spring-Heeled Jack

This is one of the most unusual stories to occur in September set in Provincetown in Massachusetts. 

It started in September 1938, which was sightings of a tall eerie figure in a hooded cape, dark clothes and fire breathing. He had shining blue or red eyes and very large silver ears. Some say that he wore a mask. He was capable of leaping over 10 ft high fences and jump up onto the rooftops. His cape flapped like wings. 

"The Black Flash" is what they call him as he's now an urban legend. He always liked to jump out and scare people. He found it funny and laughed so much. His laughter sounded cruel and mocking. Someone was so scared they took a shot at him but he only laughed at them and appeared unfazed.  

Men tackled him The Black Flash but he overpowered them all and got away. Well, he stood about 8 ft tall! Not only did he torment people, but he also breathed fire! The flames that come out of his mouth was blue in colour.   

He caused a lot of panic throughout the town. He made a regular shocking appearance many times each year and then he stopped in 1945. Police cornered him once and he jumped so high that he escaped. And the last time he was seen was when local children flung hot water at him and he ran off. That was it. Often evil spirits flee from water. No one has seen him since then, which makes many outsiders and sceptics think it was a prankster. That's some joke! 

This entity sounds a lot like the English legendary "Spring-heeled Jack", who terrorised people around London and Liverpool during Victorian times. Spring Heeled Jack was first seen in 1837. This entity was also like The Black Flash, who did similar great leaps onto rooftops and he could breathe fire! 

Some believe this was all party tricks! Of Spring-heeled Jack, it's theorised this prankster was really the Irish nobleman Henry Beresford, the Marquess of Waterford. If so, that was impressive! A fantastic costume and amazing trickery set for Halloween. 

Maybe someone borrowed the idea of Spring-heeled Jack for Provincetown? or if not, was it just mass hysteria? With police involvement, well no. Or was it an unknown entity of paranormal origins?

Tangled month of September

September is a dark shift. The Corn / Harvest Moon later this month will happen and so will the Autumn Equinox. Days will grow darker as nights get longer. Chills will hang by a thread in the air and crawling with dread. LOOK OUT FOR SPIDERS!

Big spiders will appear indoors. Not just to keep warm and dry but to find eight-legged friendships! Spiders are keen to search for each other during their mating season. While the majority of spiders are not social animals, they tend to feel lonely in the Autumn and go dating out on the web. Male spiders have to be really clever and careful when approaching female spiders, who are much more aggressive. Female spiders are tough and sassy by nature. They have to be, as it's a defence mechanism to defend their young against predators. 

If you want to hear spooky spiders stories, I will share these creepy legends. 

Ghost Spiders of the Old Vicarage, which is a British folklore legend: A resident of an old vicarage during Victorian times collected arachnids. Some of these in his collection were tropical spiders and tarantulas. The house is a ruin today but visitors have experienced the sensation of invisible cobwebs, but that isn't the shocking part. Ghost hunters have seen eerie shadow spiders the size of dinner plates, walking across the walls and vanishing. Late night guests heard the sounds of scurrying legs running through the floorboards. 

The Jorogumo or The Binding Bride of Japanese folklore: When a certain spider, the Golden Silk Orb Weaver, becomes 400 years old, it's earned supernatural powers. It shape-shifts into a very beautiful woman playing a musical instrument (the lute) in quiet solitary places including waterfalls. Often men are victims lured in by her enchanting beauty. It's a trap though. Drawn in like spider and the fly. Once she's got them, she transforms back into a spider and kills them. 

The Ghost Web of Borley Rectory: There was once a haunted house that became infamous until it got burned down in 1939. Of Borley in Essex, this huge house once had a plethora of ghosts, including an army of ghost spiders! Found in the cold dark cellar, these phantom spiders appeared when someone shone a light in the dark. Believed to be dense negative energy taking form of spiders. The spiders spun dark shadowy webs, and also turned the atmosphere cold. People even felt as if many spiders crawled all over them. Eek!

Ghost DNA

 There are some incredible stories lately. One of the latest feeds, which might've been around longer than seen online, is a story about ancient humans not being what we thought they were. Living ghosts, which means unknown people who left behind traces. In humans there are usual DNA linked to stories and places, exactly where our ancestors came from. This is true, but also it isn't as simple to understand because in every human are unexplained ancestors that don't appear in records. This is "Ghost DNA". It sounds creepy, because scientists don't like talking about it. 

In humans there is ghost DNA which is older than Neanderthal. It's about a human species that doesn't exist, and scientists don't have an answer. We were told humans evolved from Africa 300,000 to 315,000 years ago, so spread across the globe. Europeans, Desi and other South Asians have got 1% and 2% Neanderthal DNA. East Asians have higher Neanderthal DNA. 

Denisovans are another species who left DNA in modern people mainly from Oceania regions and the Philippines. Tibetans and Sherpas have small amount of Denisovan, while smaller amounts in populations in Eurasia. 

Homo Sapiens are modern humans total, which is what African people are, but this is wrong. They found ghosts in human DNA and doesn't make sense. A species not in record. An unknown people. What;s more is that these are a very ancient species from millions of years ago, who lived in West Africa, before the time of Homo Sapiens! and then interbred later with Homo Sapiens. Also the Ghosts left their mark that defines our speech and language, called the FOXP2 gene. They've given us intelligence and made a difference.

Friday the 13th

It's another time for my blogging to wake up. I've been preoccupied and have offered input to friends and family. Sometimes you'll find me on Storm Valkyrie's blog, the link is in the Friends list. We're opposites and her light magic with my darker shadowy views. She invited me to be a guest on her sweet kind blog, as a BFF and give balance 

It's Friday the 13th and everyone knows it. The people fear this date. It's believed to be unlucky. A bad date! Will ghosts appear? Can you see paranormal things? Friday the 13th isn't about ghosts and this comes from horror films. It may have hauntings and other eeriness folklore but it's a cursed time.

Here are some events on Friday the 13th:

The slaughter of all the members of the Knights Templar.

The most deadliest tropical storm on record was the Bhola Cyclone in Bangladesh that killed many thousands of people.

A plane crashed into the freezing altitude in the Andes, where the survivors ate the deceased. On the same day, another plane crashed in Russia that killed 147 people. 

The German forces bombed Buckingham Palace in 1940.

A cruise ship Costa Concordia sunk off the coast of Italy, killing about 32 people.

The 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris was the deadliest since WW2 as 130 people died.

The Black Friday Bushfires of Australia in 1939 left 71 people dead, followed by 438 deaths from the ongoing heatwave.

The 1989 "October Surprise" in Western New York was hit by a freak blizzard, sending thousands without power and destroying trees.

On 1521 the Aztec Empire fell because of the Spanish Inquisition, with a genocide of the native population. About 650k Aztec people were killed during the horrific event.

In 1964, a 28 year old woman was raped and murdered outside her home in New York, while 35 people just watched and did nothing. 

In 2010, a 13 year old boy was struck by lightning in England. It happened at exactly the time of 13:13 and he survived with a mild burn.

The film director for the scary film "Psycho" was Alfred Hitchcock who was born on Friday the 13th 1899.

So according to a 1993 article "Is Friday the 13th Bad for your Health?", researchers found more people end up in hospital due to traffic accidents. 

They also tell us that on Friday the 13th in September 2029, an asteroid will pass extremely close to earth, making it nearer than any of our satellites. Some hint this is going to cause disaster.

Feeling nervous already? Just treat it like any normal day. Bad things happen all the time, not just on Friday the 13th.

The Yule Cat

There is a terrifying Christmas tradition among many that I shall discuss here. This one is called Jólakötturinn or The Yule Cat. It's from Iceland and many children have grown up fearing this creature. Every Christmas in Iceland when children are eagerly looking forward to celebrating and opening their presents, they're also full of fear that the Yule Cat might come and eat them. 

The Yule Cat itself is a giant and believed to be from the dark cold mountains where other evil entities dwell. Each Christmas the Yule Cat journeys to the towns and villages, looking for prey. It's also said that the giant cat will kill people who don't have new clothes for Christmas. Okay this is creepy, especially when people are desperate and have to make fresh items of clothing including socks just to keep the Yule Cat monster away. 

Some people have toned it down a little over the years to say the Yule Cat will only steal their food if they haven't got new clothes by Christmas eve. If you forgot to buy any clothes by the 24th December, then you better get your knitting needles out.

The blue hole

There are a few things that I want to mention briefly. The first is my blog will feature some well known horror characters, haunted houses, ghosts and paranormal. Secondly, I shall include some stories about dark and dangerous places. Third I will mention poisonous and deadly lifeforms. Fourth I will mention mysteries and crime stories.

This one is about dangerous places. The Blue Hole is a sinkhole in the sea. Some are found around the word but there's a very deadly one in Egypt. Between 130 to 200 people have died at the Blue Hole, in the area of Dahab in the Red Sea. The blue hole was very popular in the 20th century for tourists. Many enthusiastic divers wanted to explore it and for decades the sinkhole grew a bad reputation for causing so many human fatalities. The blue hole is nicknamed the "diver's cemetery". 

While some have considered this place is cursed or the dwelling of a monster or sea demon. The Bedouin tribes people have been afraid of the Blue Hole and stayed away from it. They believe the Blue Hole is a portal for a sinister entity and is haunted by the spirit of a girl who took her own life. 

One of the main causes of deaths is Nitrogen narcosis, where the divers run out of gas or suffer decompression sickness. Divers are requested to dive no further than below 40 meters, but the blue hole is very deep and estimated to be 130 meters. Also the blue hole is home to many dangerous animals, including sharks, giant moray eels and lionfish. If you go to Egypt, avoid the Blue Hole underwater at the Red Sea.

London Necropolis Railway

 

In Victorian times, people were obsessed with death and the macabre. There was also a train specifically for the dead, not really the norm, and it was officially designed as a funeral train. It was called the London Necropolis Railway, which was first opened in November 1854. 

Made to transport the deceased, acting as a funeral train service to carry mourners and then reach the destination for burial. It was started by the London Necropolis Company or LNC at the time, and be used from Waterloo Station in London to the company's cemetery in Brookwood, Surrey. It was also designed to work as a funeral service train for "centuries to come"! 

However, this nice idea endured many years of transporting the dead and the mourners until WW2. During which, the railway track was so severely damaged by air raid bombings that it was considered unworthy of any use. The remains of the track was taken up and then the train itself simply ceased to be used for funerals. It seemed that gothic piece of history shut down and is now a museum piece and a memory at Brookwood when a placard and small railway fragment display detailing of the London Necropolis Railway was created in 2007. 

Even the cemetery owned by the LNC has become overgrown.

The haunted Versailles

 

This is a fascinating ghost story, a documented event that is still a mystery to us 123 years later. It began in the year 1901 when two English women visited France. They both travelled to the gardens of Versailles after enjoying a nice trip to Paris. The two friends worked at St Hugh's College in Oxford as academics. Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain visited Paris and then planned to see the Grand Trianon, although they found it was closed, so they then decided to see the Petit Trianon.

Both women had a guidebook, although things started to look strange. They found themselves lost in a place without any signposts and appearing different to the map, which made them wander into a shadowy wooded area of the gardens. They noticed empty small buildings and people that seemed like "in a tableau vivant" or the scene was unnatural looking and almost dreamlike. Both women felt an intense emotion that was oppressive, perhaps like the sensation of being near a thunderstorm. It was heavy, and the atmosphere was depressing. They noticed a couple of gardeners but wearing old fashioned clothes including tricorn hats. They asked the men for directions and were told to walk straight ahead.  

Soon everything looked flat and two-dimensional; without any life, as if everything around them was a scene on a tapestry or a picture book. They continued walking, both feeling unnerved by the creepy change of surround. They passed an eerie looking man sitting in a garden kiosk staring at them, and he made them feel very nervous, until another man rushed over to them to rescue them. He warned them away from the kiosk, and directed them to a path, and then he was gone. The women said later of him that he wore buckled shoes, was red faced and dark eyed. 

The women crossed a small bridge that led to a garden lawn by the palace. There was a beautiful lady sat drawing a picture on a sketch pad. She was blonde and wearing an 18th century style dress, the lady made eye contact with Charlotte but this made her feel quite nervous. Later on, Charlotte said that she believes this lady was Marie Antoinette's ghost. 

Soon the two women arrived at the Petit Trianon. A cheerful footman appeared and showed them the door to the entrance. It was inside they found the place full of tourists and everything felt real again as though it returned to normal. The women were so disturbed by their experience at the gardens around the Petit Trianon that they recorded it all. This became known as the "Moberly-Jourdain Incident". Some put this down to a haunting of events before the French Revolution, where Marie Antoinette enjoyed staying. Others believe the two English women had a timeslip. However, sceptics and others believe that the women either hallucinated or came across people in costumes. Other explanations have been put forward to but still the subject is fascinating.

End of Summer moon chat

This is a list of names given to the full moon. Various traditions and ancient cultures have names a full moon that occurs at different times of the year. While there are lots of websites and books dedicated to listing them all, I shall plunge in and say that I go with less known names. 

August is mainly called a Sturgeon Moon or Fish Moon, as it was a time when fish appeared in abundance in lakes and rivers across North America. In old Europe, the Celts gave the August full moon two names, either or, Lynx Moon and Dispute Moon. Anglo Saxons called the August moon the Grain Moon. In Old England, this moon was still Grain Moon and then Lightning Moon, Barley Moon and Fruit Moon. 

Some websites put Corn Moon as the name by English people from the Middle Ages, but this is wrong, because there was no corn in England or anywhere in Europe back then! Corn is from the Americas and none of it was introduced into Europe until well after the 1600's. Some writers could have this fact confused with the Green Corn Moon name from the Cherokee tribe. Corn Moon of June, which is one of the names given by Native Americans. 

The August full moon was also called Swan Flight Moon by the Inuit, Flying Up Moon and Red Moon.

Too much sunlight

The days are long and light is very bright. I prefer the shade to be honest as well as cool Summers under grey skies. I love Summer nights too. I've not posted for a while, as I've been managing other work ties and also doing side projects. I shall draw open the curtains and step out into the garden for some tea and return to this nook.

Sleep Paralysis

On this subject, sleep paralysis explains why people fear this time of day or night. It's the time of just waking or being woken up by a sense of dread, a physically painful time as this is reported when chest is tight and unable to breath. It's as though someone's chest is being sat on. People have also felt unable to move and can't even speak properly. During this time of waking up, people can encounter something with them that may look human, animal or supernatural. It's believed by doctors that sleep paralysis is the natural way that stops you acting out your dreams, usually. Some may end up not having this sensation while others experience sleep walking but those are different topics. This is what happens while asleep. Although when people wake up their bodies may still be locked in that paralysis. It lasts a very short time although it can feel like ages if the feeling is scary. People that often experience this will notice they can't move their arms or legs, and haven't got control. The waking stage is often different to be fully awake as people feel disorientated and even feel as if they've been inside a dream for real and suddenly back to reality. Usually it happens amongst children and young adults. One of the biggest causes is insomnia. Some during sleep paralysis will hallucinate and think there's something with them in the room. They might even hear strange noises. A part of this may include tingling sensations or even pins and needles. People often panic while having sleep paralysis. There are many myths and legends and stories in folklore related to sleep paralysis, including the incubus and succubus, night hags, demons, aliens and ghosts.

Duskwood

Duskwood is a spooky location under perpetual night and shadow. It's full of sinister creatures and wild beasts. While there are humans living there, it's also a bleak location and a place of nightmares. There's also ghosts, ghouls, skeletons, ogres, wolves and spiders found throughout Duskwood. This is  one of many regions from the World of Warcraft franchise. Duskwood can be found in the continent of Azeroth, and it's not far from a dead volcano, which is a fertile crater of huge trees of significance. It's importance is because of a portal there to the Emerald Dream. Within the region of Duskwood are many sombre areas. Paths lead to different directions, through frightening corners and locations, such as the Tranquil Garden Cemetery, the Rotting Orchard and the Darkened Bank. Villages within Duskwood include Darkshire and Raven Hill. These are still inhabited by people who cling in the hope that the region would be lifted of it's curse. Sadly Duskwood had once been a beautiful lush place teeming with life, was colourful, fertile and the days were full of sunshine. It was once called Brightwood, and then an evil was cast over it. This happened when a priestess named Velinde Starsong arrived, sweeping away demons with a magical scythe. What happened next was a mystery because she simply vanished, leaving behind the scythe, which was claimed by a man named Jitters who didn't know anything about it and summoned an army of werewolves named Worgen, creating a carnage of death. In terror, Jitters fled still carrying the scythe, bringing about the darkness that now envelopes that entire zone. He tried to rid himself of the scythe but found Dark Riders had come and spilled innocent blood in the village. It's not known if the Dark Riders own the scythe or not. Now the trees are dying, it's covered in a dark mist, and the soil is barren, as the sun no longer shines there, and it's overtaken by monsters and other sinister creatures.

Lupercalia festival

Before the holiday became known as Valentine's Day, there was a much older ritual held on the 15th February named Lupercalia Festival in ancient Rome. This was a feast for the wolf deity Lupercus, a god that ruled land, harvest, wild animals and fertility. Farmers sought out the strength and protection of Lupercus and made offerings to him. This god is connected to a she-wolf named Lupa that helped care for the twin boy babies, Romulus and Remus. The brothers were sons of Mars, the god of war, and also Rhea Silvia, a beautiful mortal woman who was a princess and a Vestal Virgin. The brothers grew up to be powerful men who later founded the city of Rome. It was in honour of the founders that the celebration of Lupercalia was great as it celebrated Lupa the foster mother and Lupercus the great wolf of the wilderness. The feast itself was gruesome and dark. Men would try to channel their inner wolves during this feast day, so much noise and howling would've gone on. They would sacrifice a goat and a dog, combining both of their blood into a bowl, and a knife would dip into the mixture, then removed dripping. Two noble children would have this blood smeared on their foreheads, while cloth would be soaked in milk from a nanny goat, and used to wash away the blood on the children's foreheads. The children would've been encouraged to laugh even if they were scared. This was to show everyone that they were unafraid of the wolf's magical powers. There were different forms of worship of each wolf. Those who followed Lupa the she-wolf formed a branch named the Luperci. This included men becoming wolves chasing women in the streets and beating them with whips, then taking them home for sex or keeping as wives. This became toned down later on and eventually was replaced by the gentle and softer Christianised version of Valentine's Day.

Succubus

The succubus is a female entity that seduces men as they sleep. The term of succubus is from Latin Succuba that means "to lie beneath". They can be considered demons, that resemble beautiful women. Their male counterparts are called incubus. Many associate this with folklore and dream visions, also with nightmares and psychosis. Some experts in psychiatry believe this is part of a phenomenon called "sleep paralysis", which occurs in the stage of waking up and may be considered hallucinations during hypnagogic state. Some people experience sheer terror and feel unable to speak or even move but during this phase, they also may have horrific visions of being attacked by entities. Some stories about the succubus, for example, are frightening and she appears to attack men violently in bed. Many people suffering experiences like these seek the help of priests or doctors, and certain medicines ease it. The succubus and incubus have parallels with other creatures associated with sleep. I plan to do a post on Sleep Paralysis soon.

Hoia Baciu

 

Transylvania is a creepy place and is so vast that its famous for all kinds of horrors. 

Within Transylvania is a dark mysterious forest named Hoia Baciu. It's been described as haunted and it looks often eerie, especially in nightfall, during winter and in fog. Many have disappeared into thin air while in the forest, including a shepherd and 200 sheep. Some defy explanation. A little girl vanished in the forest, and then five years later she emerged not having aged and still wearing the same clothes as if new. A woman got lost there, and then emerged with a 15th century coin in her pocket. Some have left the forest suffering burns, headaches and fever. No one can understand why the forest has so much intense paranormal activity, including ghosts and UFO's. Radiation levels are high in that forest and some explain that this is caused by natural uranium based subsoil. 

The trees tend to look odd too. Some have twisted and seem deformed, growing in strange positions, while others appear "immortal". All of the plants in one area of the forest form a perfect round circle. People that visited the forest are unnerved by many weird experiences in there, including the sounds of terrified screams and glowing green eyes peering at them in the darkness. Some people have met aliens, cryptids and ghosts. It's a bizarre location where timeslips have happened to some who came back to tell their tales.

The Cursed Amethyst

This magnificent gemstone is known as The Cursed Amethyst and it's not something you want to have as a gift. Also called the Delhi Purple Sapphire, which was locked away in the Natural History Museum in London. Once discovered there by curator Peter Tandy, after being hidden for so long, there was a note attached with it that described a terrible curse stained with blood. It was originally from the temple of the thunder god Indra, but was looted by the British Army in the 19th century. This was called the Siege of Cawnpore. One of the soldiers who robbed the temple was dazzled by the "purple sapphire" and wanted to keep it. After returning home, he experienced a sting of bad luck. He was so unhappy that he gave the gemstone to another, who then also experienced a lot of misery. Every person who owned the gemstone always suffered horribly with misfortunes. 

A British scientist named Edward Heron-Allen took the purple stone and gave it to a woman. She was already gifted with a beautiful singing voice but as soon as she owned the Cursed Amethyst, her voice was gone! Many more dark things followed, and Heron-Allen was so afraid that he flung the amethyst into a canal. Strangely, the gemstone returned to him! While the canal was being cleaned, the stone was recovered and then handed back to its owner, and Edward Heron-Allen was horrified. He then had the stone place in a fashioned jewel and locked it away in a bank. He left instructions for his daughter that three years after his death, she should remove the amethyst and hand it over to the museum. He died in 1943. Flash forward to 2007, the amethyst went on display at the museum. The curator who transported the amethyst had spoke of a strange lightning storm around his car! Now the Cursed Amethyst is in a vault at the museum.

Draugr

 

In Norse mythology are frightening creatures called Draugr. They're zombies with a difference. They're described as being physical ghosts, with certain powers and diseases that make them pass on their very abilities to others, a contagious form of spreading more like them. These can attack the living and make a person another draugr. These creatures have great strength as they can break every bone in their victims bodies. The draugr gives off a terrible stench of rotting flesh, but they can look like corpses that are deathly pale blue, or even decayed black. Some are even bloated to the size of a bull! Some have been described as huge in size and height, capable of fire breathing and making thunderous roars. They have long black claws to scratch their victims to death. Despite their horrific appearance, the draugr are magical too. They can see into the future and can control the weather. They have the ability to shape-shift into animals, and one such draugr turned into a seal during a storm (perhaps created by one of them) and caused shipwrecks. Also one draugr became a mutilated bull, and another turned into a bloodied horse, while another turned into a monstrous cat who suffocated its victim as they slept. Draugr can enter peoples dreams and are capable of telepathy, as well as cursing people. Although super powerful, the draugr hate sunlight. Protection against draugr is light from the sun or even from foxfire, a bioluminescent fungi. Draugr are immune to weapons but they dislike iron. It's best to remove the head of  draugr and burn them, to stop them coming back. Another tactic against the draugr is to make a corpse door, a type of false room that a draugr can be imprisoned inside. So first leave the corpse door open and when a draugr enters, slam the door shut quickly and then brick it up so the draugr is forever trapped inside.

Cthulhu

 

This is one of the most fearsome cosmic beings named Cthulhu. A creation by the author H. P. Lovecraft, introduced in a story "The Call of Cthulhu" published in Weird Tales magazine in 1928. There are many such cosmic entities by Lovecraft and Cthulhu is called The Great Old One. Born on the planet Vhoorl, found at the 23rd nebula, Cthulhu went to the star Zoth and gave forth children, the Star Spawn of Cthulhu. He went to Saturn, then he landed on Earth where he created the city R'lyeh on land in the Pacific Ocean. Deities from Earth called Elder Things disapproved, and waged a war against the alien Cthulhu, until finally both came to an agreement. Cthulhu entered the alienlike city of R'lyeh and fell into the deep long sleep, but he was able to communicate with humans in dreams. A doomsday cult of Cthulhu appeared, full of worshippers of the cosmic monster. R'lyeh was destroyed, making it disintegrate and sink into the sea. Cthulhu continued to sleep in the sunken city at the bottom of the ocean and it was believed Cthulhu would wake up and return.   

There's a following of Cthulhu that worship this creature, which is described as immortal and gigantic with features of a dragon and an octopus.  This entity among other similar cosmic monsters once ruled the solar system but have been under a long spell sleep. Such beings filled the readership with all kinds of dread including nightmares, paranoia and psychosis. Cthulhu has become almost mythical in modern times, as the character inspires emotions, imagination and even dark ideas that make some people feel differently towards life. The ultimate monster that comes from horror sci-fi fiction although seems to fill everyone with awe and terror. It could be because generally people fear the unknown. Also humans have been led to think they're the centre of the universe but Cthulhu reminds them that they're small and insignificant.

Stygai

 In the furthest east of the continent of Essos, found in the series A Song of Ice and Fire, there is a vast region called The Shadowlands and a ruined city named Stygai. It's also called City of Bones, Corpse City and City of Night. It's located in the Ash River and in the mountains, and this place is said to be the birthplace of dragons. It's miles away from the port city of Asshai at the coast. Further inland, Stygai is in the vale of the shadow, exactly where the river forks. Nearby is a landscape of ghost grass, so-called because of its long invasive white stalks that poisons other plants. It's believed that ghost grass contains the trapped souls of the dead. Stygai is a ruined city where even shadowbinders fear to wander up there. In Stygai its said there's frightening statues because many such statues that found elsewhere originally came from the Shadowlands. Its believed that the further east from Asshai you go, the more twisted and scary the creatures become. The Ash River itself is black during the daytime but glows green at night, which is full of monstrous creatures including blind deformed fish. The water of the Ash river is too toxic to drink. It's said that the ruined city is haunted but no one has ever come back from there to describe it in more details. The ruined city of Stygai only experiences a little amount of sunlight at noon but spends the rest of the time in dreadful darkness.
